you could tell by the cigarette and she by the look on your face you're quiet, I mean, it's been quiet yea, I know it's just that these small-town roads they keep wearing me down and I really wanna go I wanna go now 'cause I'm afraid, and I keep thinking there's something wrong with me and I'd rather not find out I'd rather look away you're looking for a reason to move to a better place you could tell by the cigarette and she by the look of your place between two rivers and the mountains that keep flowing by between two rivers the sadness that's in their smiles between two rivers the silence of the forest streams between two rivers in the middle of our dreams you could tell by the way she's standing and she by the look on your face there's a stream that goes back to hell and then there's that other place we've been riding along the river banks for a hundred days now it's a pitch black truth that goes both ways between two rivers and the mountains that keep flowing by between two rivers the sadness that's in their smiles between two rivers the silence of the forest streams between two rivers in the middle of our dreams you keep bringing up the sun two kids are on the run between two rivers

when I left the town the prairie sang its dusty song with a croaky voice or a misty croon on the sand-washed tracks of a man long gone verse with no words chorus of curses fumbling steps and a tremulous beat that rises like the tide and comes down with the moon I might be here by your side now but I might be gone by tomorrow tend the fire keep my bed made pay heed to the vultures there's too much at stake and too many mistakes on the shores of this dark lake I might be gone by tomorrow but I will be back another day I might be here by your side now but I might be gone by tomorrow when I'm not around something from beneath the waves from the nightmare scenes, oh no might creep up and between your sheets

I've got ghosts riding in the backseat and a black heart pumping gas I've got two moons in the headlights too many miles before the last I've got an ashtray full of failures and gun in the glovebox in the rear mirror, a shadow of failure is still chasing me got on my knees I don't know any of these roads nor do I know when's the next stop the things we figured out together will be burnt before I'm there two cups of coffee I told myself "I love me" And then succumb to another night that's still chasing me got on my knees I got in a black hole and I can't find my way out but I can hear you singing through the cracks in the sky I got in a black hole and I can't find my way out but I can see a dim hope through each cloudless night whiff of disinfectant to feel closer to death in this sterile world we die in masses bury me by the roadside that's where all my friends are no doubt, still chasing me I got on my knees still chasing me
